About Laurie Bookstein

Independent Educational Consultant

Laurie Bookstein, JD, CEP, of College Placement Services is a dedicated independent educational consultant and advisor with more than 15 years of experience in helping students and their families embark on the college search process.

After years of practicing law and serving as the Secondary School Committee Chairperson for the University of Pennsylvania in Wisconsin, Laurie found her passion in counseling high school students seeking assistance in navigating their own fulfilling path through the college search and application process. Laurie understands that many families need independent and knowledgeable guidance from a professional educational consultant who is dedicated to understanding the needs of her clients and the options available from among the nearly 3,000 colleges in the United States.

In 1996, Laurie founded College Placement Services and successfully built her practice on demonstrating the benefits of independent college consulting. Laurie became the first Certified Educational Planner (CEP) and the first full professional member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) currently practicing in Wisconsin. She is also a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the Wisconsin Association for College Admission Counseling (WACAC), and the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA).

Laurie has also been selected by the American Institute of Certified Educational Planners (AICEP) to serve as proctor for other educational consultants seeking to become certified in the field.

Laurie is committed to maintaining the most up-to-date knowledge of developments in the college admissions process by personally visiting hundreds of colleges nationwide. She also refreshes her professional certification by attending several national college admissions conferences each year, where she has been asked to conduct presentations together with college admissions representatives on topics such as "Making the Most of Your College Visit" and "Putting Yourself Out There During Interviews."

Laurie graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Sociology and holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Albany Law School of Union University. She is also a 2004 graduate of the Harvard Summer Institute on College Admissions. Prior to her career as a college consultant, she worked as counsel for the American Hospital Association in Chicago, Illinois.
